Keepin’ it classy at ‘SYTYCD’

23 Jul

I understand my dad’s gripe with it. I understand Entertainment Weekly’s gripe with it. But I’m going to have to respectfully disagree and say it: Last night’s episode of “So You Think You Can Dance” proved what I’ve been realizing all season.

This is one of the classiest shows on television.

I started to realize it when three major stars died back to back to back. As opposed to glossing over the deaths or giving a generic speech about them, judge and creator Nigel Lithgow shared very heartfelt memories about Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson.

Then I realized that previous contestants rarely vanished from the scene. They show up at auditions, they turn up as choreographers. When the season is over, even if they didn’t win, they stick around. That crew takes care of their dancers. They love what they do, and it makes for hella good television.

Then choreographer Tyce Diorio (who my dear friend Amanda made me realize, when Cat Deeley says his name, it sounds like “Tasty Oreo) decided to use one of his contemporary numbers to make it about breast cancer — like Mia Michaels did with her father a few seasons ago. The dancing is good. It’s probably great. I wouldn’t know, because when I know the intended story going into a dance, that’s all I see. That’s all I can think about. It fills me up, and it’s a beautiful thing.

The show has been promoting its 100th episode tonight, and I’m psyched. Favorite dances from last season — like, I dunno, the Emmy-nominated ones! — are coming back. Are the original dancers returning, too? Not sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised.

About halfway through last night’s epsiode, I realized I wished I’d live blogged it. My goal: To remember to do so on Wednesday. This show rocks, and if you haven’t given it a chance yet, DO IT.

I’ll leave you with one of my favorite — and yes, one of the Emmy-nominated! — dances.

OK, fine, here’s another. Dancing starts at 1:40.

last night was great. But I’m positive the Katie Holmes thing was blown WAY out of proportion!

Snap, Crackle, Pop says: Agreed. I half expected her to be really, really good and not just carried around the stage like a princess. But then I realized her whole segment was booooring!

I'd love to hear what you think!
